The Last Onsen Dinner

For our last dinner in the onsen, they gave us one of the four private dining rooms--the one configured for westerners.  Its theme was winter, and while it's hard to see in the cell phone picture, that inset wall was flecked with something that sparkled, giving it the impression of snow.  It was absolutely gorgeous.

We took panoramic shots to convey the lovely symmetry in the door trim and window design.  As usual the visual aesthetic was super-intentional and pleasing.

As usual, please remember that all these food pictures are from a single meal.

Sake presentation!

Delicious fish ball wrapped in tiny bits of fried potato.

The white maple-leaf looking sheet is the fat that lives under fish-skin.  It was really, really good.

Fish face!  This is one half of the head of Buri--a Japanese Amberjack.  We ate several different presentations of this fish while we were there, and this was the final one.  It was delicious.

More shabushabu with fish and greens.

The first Sake we ordered they thought they didn't have.  When they realized they were wrong, our lovely waitress brought us a second "water" glass (the little tumbler on the right) containing our original request, to make up for it.  It turns out double-fisting high-end Sake while eating the best food in a mountain town is an absolutely excellent way to spend an evening.

Afterwards, the cold noodles we were brought were used with the last of the broth.

Dessert!  Lovely fresh fruits and green tea ice cream.
